Do we live in a society of crabs?
I saw the below Tweet from Jerry Teixeira and it instantly reminded me of two incredible crab related analogies:
First, does the below resonate with you? Do you think we live in a society of crabs? Have there been times when your ability to take action has led to a feeling that others are trying to tear you down?
If you put one crab in a bucket, it will crawl out. If you put multiple crabs in a bucket, they will pull each other down every time one starts to crawl out. If a crab continues to try and crawl out of the bucket the other crabs will break its leg. Unfortunately, we live in a society of crabs. When you are climbing out of a bucket full of crabs, there will be many people who try to pull you back down to their level.@JoshuaMedcalf in Chop Wood, Carry Water: How to Fall in Love with the Process of Becoming Great
An illuminating follow up question is if we do indeed live in a society of crabs, then what is the highest form of treason? Making a leap for the rim of the bucket.
The highest treason a crab can commit is to make a leap for the rim of the bucket@SPressfield in The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles
So what is one supposed to do if we really live in a society of crabs?
I agree with Jerry: all one can do is ignore these people (these crabs) and keep growing (making a leap for the rim of the bucket).
